Septoplasty

What is the septum?

The nasal septum is the midline partition in the nose, made of bone and cartilage that separates the nasal cavity into the two halves as seen through the nostrils.

What is a deviated septum?

The septum is sometimes bent to one or both sides, from birth or because of injury. This may cause nasal blockage, snoring, mouth breathing and bleeding etc.

What is Septoplasty?

  • Septoplasty is an operation done to correct the deviated or buckled septum
  • The procedure may take between 30 to 90 minutes to perform, depending on the complexity of the deviation
  • The procedure is generally carried out under a general anaesthetic
  • Typically, a cut is made on one side of the nose to access the septum. The lining of the septum is then lifted to inspect the deviated part of the septum
  • The deviation is corrected as required
  • A few absorbable stitches are then placed to close the septum

Postoperative recovery

  • Pain is usually minimal, although nasal blockage can cause some discomfort
  • Discharge of blood stained mucus is common after the operation, which lasts for around 7-10 days
  • Complete recovery can take up to 6 months
  • One week off work is generally adequate for immediate postoperative recovery
